I teach the kids how to play mancala (Euchre would be fun too) then we have a tournament to get a "winner". It's fun!! The kids learn how to play a new game and learn how to win (and lose) gracefully.
Materials: mancala boards (there are plenty of them in the math supply closet)
Labels: 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, fun, social connection, time: 1 week

That's our mantra at CHCA Middle School ... and in pursuit of this goal, every student here meets daily with an "advisory", a small group of 10-12 students with a faculty advisor. This website is a collection of advisory activity ideas that work, submitted by our teachers.
